Women’s Health Exam

What is a Well-Woman Exam?

A well-woman exam is a preventative health screening designed for early detection of any health or wellness problems in the woman’s reproductive organs. It can include a full checkup, a pap smear, pelvic exam, and breast exam. Well-woman exams are typically recommended to start at the beginning of sexual activity or at the age of 21 and continue yearly. After the age of 65, we may also recommend a bone density scan.

This exam will focus on the female reproductive system–examining the vagina, uterus, cervix, ovaries, and breasts. Vital Clinic & Spa offers the convenience of in-house labs for any needed blood work or urinalysis. Regular mammograms begin at age 35-40 depending on family history, and if a mammogram or breast ultrasound is recommended, we will make the proper referrals. Our board-certified medical providers can also aid in the management of PCOS or other hormonal imbalances, menopause, irregular menstrual cycles, oral or long-acting birth control (Mirena or Paragard IUD), a fertility workup, and STD testing.

This appointment is also a great opportunity to analyze and discuss your overall health–habits, concerns, goals, lifestyle, and any needs based on your sexual activity, age, or psychosocial function. Based on these discussions, Harman Buttar, MD will be able to properly advise you towards the best treatment plans or life adjustments to increase your overall health.

Importance of Well-Woman Exams

Well-woman exams are extremely important in allowing for the early detection of abnormalities in your reproductive system. Annual women’s health exams are crucial for every woman, even if you feel like you are in perfect health. With our women’s health exam in Cypress, we can alert you about possible health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and more early on.

Yearly exams provide a greater chance for even earlier detection because we will be able to monitor even the slightest changes from year to year. We will screen for breast cancer, human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer, or any other changes in your body. No one wants to receive bad news, but if we do find something that needs treatment, it is more likely to be treatable in a more effective and less invasive manner the sooner it is found.

What Our Women’s Health Exam Involves

A well-woman exam typically includes a pap smear, a pelvic exam, and a breast exam to help catch any early signs of cancer or other problems before it is too late.

We start the session by taking your weight, checking your pulse and blood pressure, and sometimes taking a urine sample. Once you discuss health history, ask any questions, and put on a hospital gown, we will perform the needed exams.

  • Pap Smear
Though it is a routine procedure, many patients feel intimidated by a pap smear. Our knowledgeable experts will explain the procedure and address your queries regarding this test. A pap smear involves inserting a lubricated speculum into your vaginal canal, which helps the doctor view the inside of the vulva, vagina, and cervix. Next, she will swipe your cervix using a cotton swab and send it to the lab for tests.
  • Age & Risk Appropriate Preventative Services
Our medical providers are able to provide referrals for mammograms, breast ultrasounds, immunizations, colonoscopies, endoscopies, and diagnostic exams such as CT and DEXA bone scans based on the latest medical guidelines.
  • Genitourinary Concerns
Our medical providers tailor your exam to your concerns–from breast to pelvic exams. We evaluate concerns such as breast pain, breast mass, breast discharge, vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness, pelvic pain, urinary tract infections, menstrual irregularities, birth control options, STD / STI testing, and menopause symptoms.
  • Hormone Optimization
As certified Biote providers, we perform an in-depth hormone analysis and tailor your treatment based on protocols that are tested for safety and efficacy. BioTE pellets are less likely to cause side effects than other Hormone Replacement Therapies (HRTs) because they contain plant-based bioidentical hormones and release them slowly over time. This reduces the risk of high and low hormone levels, which can cause bloating, cramps, irritability, and indigestion. The pellets are not noticeable and last 3-6 months.

What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam is a preventative health screening of the female reproductive system. This exam typically includes a pap smear, pelvic exam, breast examination, and–if needed–a recommendation for a mammogram or breast ultrasound.

How often should I have a well-woman exam?

Well-woman exams are recommended annually beginning at the start of sexual activity or age 21, whichever comes first. If you have not been receiving annual wellness exams, simply make an appointment at your earliest convenience.

What can I expect during a well-woman exam at Vital Clinic & Spa in Cypress, TX?

We understand that a well-woman exam can be an intimidating appointment to make. With Harman Buttar, MD you can expect open communication, gentleness, and one-on-one care during your pelvic exam, pap smear, breast exam, and any additional screenings that they deem medically necessary. Please be open with any concerns that you have so that they can best address those concerns during your visit.

Do I need a well-woman exam if I am not sexually active?

Yes, annual well-woman exams are recommended for all women over the age of 21 whether sexually active or not. There are many concerns to screen for that are not connected to sexual activity, and beginning early and regular examinations are pivotal for the best chance of keeping your reproductive organs healthy for the future.

Do I need a well-woman exam if I am in good health and do not have any concerns?

Yes, well-woman exams involve preventative screenings in addition to troubleshooting any current health concerns. While you may feel completely healthy, it is still imperative to have professional screening to catch problems early and begin any needed treatments as soon as possible.

Should I cancel or reschedule my appointment if I am on my period?

If you are experiencing menstrual bleeding at the time of your well-woman appointment, it is best to reschedule the exam as the blood can skew some test results. Based on your schedule and your body’s predictability, it may not always be possible to reschedule, so simply let Dr. Harman know.

Do I need to continue well-woman exams if I had a hysterectomy?

Yes, experts agree that you should continue annual well-women exams even after a hysterectomy. This screening is still vital for early-detection of cancer or other health concerns. This is also a great time to discuss concerns regarding sexual activity (pain, loss of libido, or symptoms regarding your reproductive organs), menopause, bone density, urinary incontinence, or your general health.

What is human papillomavirus (HPV)?

HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a group of over 30 strains of viruses, consisting of over 100 total related viruses. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) and can cause serious health issues in the genitals. Certain strains of HPV can cause changes in the cells of the cervix, and if left untreated can sometimes lead to cervical cancer. Early screening through pap smears and HPV tests can detect precancerous cell changes and prevent cancer of the cervix.

How do I need to prepare for my well-woman exam?

As with every doctor’s visit, bring a thorough family medical history as well as a list of questions that you have for the doctor. Additionally, avoid sex for 48 hours prior to your exam to avoid skewing test results. Prior to your visit, make note of the dates of your most recent menstrual cycles. There are many phone apps available that can help you track your cycle easily.

What is the cost of a well-woman’s exam?

Most insurances cover the cost of well-woman exams. If you are paying out-of-pocket, call us today at (832) 533-8404 for a free consultation to determine what tests you will need, the cost, and any financial assistance that may be available.
